General Gowon Addresses the Nation On January 17th, 1970 After the End of the Nigerian Civil War In his address, he declared that the “so-called rising sun of Biafra is set forever” and stated that it would be “a great disservice for anyone to continue to use the word ‘Biafra’ to refer to any part of the East Central State of Nigeria.” Gowon called on all Nigerians to come together to “build a new nation,” emphasizing unity, reconciliation, and reconstruction.
