That different manufacturers have used audio input designs around different microphone type has driven my nuts over the years. I have a perfectly serviceable headset that I cannot use with my current radio because it has a dynamic microphone insert.
The input on DSD+ was selecting the correct input. I looked at the "LIsten to" box in the Windows Audio set up to ensure that the box was not checked for the VC-Cable output.

Sounds like you're trying to add conventional channels. There may be a shortcut, but I know this works: Menu -> Manage Favorites -> Choose Favorites list -> Review/Edit System -> Choose system (must be a conventional system) -> Edit Department -> Choose Dept -> Edit Channel -> New Channel -> input frequency, including the decimal point. Now you can edit the alpha tag, enter a PL tone, etc, etc ...
